Top 10 Social Media Top 10 Lists of 2009
by Dave Kerpen
I know, Top 10 lists are so played out. BUT the reason they’re so popular is, if done right, they provide great insight into the year that was. So, given that our Top 10 Most Important Tweets of 2009 post of 2 weeks ago is the most retweeted post we’ve ever had, and given that 2009 was a watershed year for social media, I present you with the Top 10 – Top 10 lists that I have found – relating to social media and social media marketing topics:
Top 10 Social Media Top 10 Lists of 2009
1) Ten Ways Social Media Changed Our Thinking in 2009 (MediaPost) The brilliant David Berkowitz shares his thoughts about how social media has changed the game in a very wide variety of fields and topics, such as democracy, death, sales and search.
2) Top Ten Most Memorable Social Media Moments of the Past Year (SunSentinel) Seth Liss takes a humorous though accurate look at 10 moments we won’t soon forget. My personal favorite: the moment your mom joined Facebook.
3) Top 10 Opportunities That Social Networking Offers (ForRent.com) This simple, straightforward post is something small businesses can probably relate to better than a lot of the industry-insider posts we often read, write and share.
4) Top 10 Biggest Social Media Stories of 2009 (VatorNews) A nice recap of the major sites and stories that captured not only our attention but big dollars, this past year.
5) Top 10 YouTube Videos for Social Good (Mashable) A great look at YouTube vides which have helped create awareness and/or raise dollars for worthy causes. For another, great, less serious YouTube Top 10 List on Mashable, check out their Top 10 YouTube Fail Videos.
6) Top 10 Facebook Apps (Mashable) Most of these apps may be better at helping you waste time than grow your business, but you can’t really argue with their popularity. Now stop wasting time reading this blog and go tend to your farm.
7) Top 10 Twitter Apps for Business (GlobalThoughtz) While I am shocked that Tweetdeck did not make this list, it is an excellent set of resources and tools for the beginner business user on Twitter.
8. Top 10 Songs About Facebook on YouTube (Mindjumpers) I like this list because it combines 2 of our favorite sites, Facebook and YouTube, for a fun set on videos that will keep you laughing, or at least agreeing.
9) Top 10 Social Media Sites That Should be Next in Line to Get Oprahfied (SocialTimes) Ok, so the title is a funny reference to the Oprah/celebrity Twitter craze that 2009 saw, but the sites listed here are all great, worthy – and sites you may not have used yet.
10) 10 Web Trends to Watch in 2010 (CNN) This post is from CNN – but it’s written by top social media blog Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore, which is significant because the number 1 trend IMHO is that social media is here to stay, for personal and business use. 2008 and 2009 were just the tip of the iceberg.
There, you have it: My Top 10 Top 10 lists in social media for 2009. What is your favorite Top 10 list?

Definitely worth looking into. Thanks!
