Why the Google-Facebook Deal is a VERY Big Deal for Your Business

googlefacebookGoogle announced yesterday that it will soon be showing real-time results of public content from many sources, including Facebook fan pages. As reported by InsideFacebook and Mashable, this is a big deal.

This is a big deal for Google, which will remain the search King, unthreatened by searches within Twitter and Facebook, as those results will now show up on Google.

This is a big deal for Facebook, as with over 1.6 million active Fan Pages, of which 700,000+ are local business, all sharing content on a regular basis, this will get Facebook lots more traffic from Google (as if Facebook, needed more traffic, right?)

But the group this is a biggest deal for is those 1.6 million Facebook fan page owners, admins, and communities. Whether you are a big brand, small business, celebrity or other Facebook fan page entity, you just got a HUGE boost of seo juice for your Page.

This deal instantly revolutionizes the field of SEO.

Think about it: If you are updating your Fan Page on a regular basis with relevant, engaging content, you will now not only be relevant to and engaging with your facebook fans, but with anybody potentially searching on Google to buy something or investigate something further.

So if I’m searching Google for, say, “great properties to buy in New York” and a real estate agency Facebook fan page just updated their fans’ stream with a note about “10 Great properties to buy in New York” – I’ll see it in real time. I’ll probably click and become a fan too, and maybe even go to an Open House.

Or if I’m searching Google for “deals on laptop computers” and Best Buy just updated their Facebook fan page with a link to a special offer for “deals on laptop computers” – that will probably get my attention even if I wasn’t yet a fan of Best Buy.

Or if I’m searching Google for “happy hours in Cleveland” and the Cleveland Ale House just updated their Facebook fan page with “Hope you join us for Happy Hour today from 6-7pm”, well, now I know where I’m going out after work.

Yes, this is a very big deal. What this means for you:

1) Build a Facebook fan page immediately if you don’t yet have one.

2) Engage your fans – and potential fans and customers, and update your fan page on a regular basis with relevant, interesting, appealing  – and now searchable content. You can update your fans’ stream a lot – just make sure you’re not spamming them with offers – but instead, offering rich, relevant text, photos, videos, notes and polls.

3) Grow your fan page. Use your own marketing and communications assets as well as Facebook advertising to do so.

4) Dominate Google real-time search listings and grow your business! :)

This sounds interesting.I think companies will have another good reason to provide valuable and engaging content.

    thanks for this post,

  4. helen says:

I completely agree, Codruta. It will also give unscrupulous marketers reasons to provide salesly content from Facebook – but that likely won’t be met well by consumers.

Everybody needs a Fan Page, Steven! Thanks for your comment :)

Wow. This is very interesting! Does the report tell what other sources/site will feed real time results?

You know, why focus on FB fan pages when you can use other sources? (Assuming the other sites maybe better)

This is something we’ve carefully considered while increasing our audience via Facebook.

Arvell, Google will pull in from MySpace and Twitter as well. But Facebook is the best source, for many reasons.

  11. Codruta Moga says:

@Helen, you’re right, where there’s audience, spammers will come too. Can’t avoid it.
But the community will filter the good stuff.

Having a Facebook page is important for any business, but Real-time search has already been active, and the method described in the article is simply NOT how it works. Authority sites like Digg will be ranked higher, but this doesn’t really change much SEO-wise. This DOES change the PPC game, as more people will be starting PPC campaigns to jump ahead of the real-time search results.

  14. Very helpful and affirming. Started page, now this will motivate me to update more often and how – with relevant content of course. Grateful.

  15. You will be placed in the paid advertising section, opposed to the organic search results.

  16. I think this is bad for search…the last guy to tweet, regardless of how relevant or spammy, is the last guy to get ranked.

    That’s like search engine’s 10 years ago.
