Call for entries…Facebook Top 40 Fan Pages 2010

Top 40 BadgeLast June, we put out a call for entries for the best, most engaging fan pages out there on Facebook. Close to 1000 pages were entered, and 40 were selected as the best of the best.

Now, with increased Facebook functionality, stream targeting, and enhanced applications for pages, the competition is WAY more steep. We’re looking forward to seeing your nominations.

As a reminder, here’s the criteria that we consider:

1) Brand Responsiveness: Look at your wall tab and ask yourself if your fans have anything to gain from interacting with your page. Does your wall have a good mix of posts from you/the page versus the fans, or is it just a wall of information and advertising from you? Do you respond to your fans when they ask a question, or even post a complaint? Social media is about interaction and building communities, so for your page to make our Top 40, you’ll have to employ this basic concept.
2) Interactivity: On that same note, are you actively encouraging your fans to participate? Examples of interactive pages include those that make use of fan polls, use their pages to run contests, or even that just provide incentives for customer feedback.
3) Creativity: Tell us what’s cool and unique about your page in particular! How do you use it to run contests and Facebook-specific promotions? What’s the coolest thing you’ve done using Static FBML?
4) Overall Design/Graphics: Let’s be honest – your page could be totally rocking out in terms of all of the above, but if it still looks like something you just threw up on a whim or looks exactly like your own personal profile for lack of customization, it’s just not as appealing as those with a lot of thought put into the design.

**Fan Count** While we are in no way obsessed with fan numbers, it would be remiss of us to pretend that they don’t matter at all. If you have a lot of fans, you’re probably doing something right, whether it’s a great page or just a great product! That being said, we will only take fan number counts into consideration in so much as they are proportionate to the reach of your business. In other words, we will not expect a small, local boutique to have anywhere near as many fans as a national brand – a few hundred fans for your neighborhood dentist is likely a great number! But we do expect well-known chains, franchises, and brand names alike to have an appropriately large fan base if we are to include them in our Top 40.

Here’s a link to download last year’s top 40 AND our best practices for a great Facebook Fan Page.

  1. I have to nominate my client, National Amusements! The page just soft-launched last week, but the design & functionalities are really outstanding (my design/developer partners at Brandcraft Inc. deserve credit), including a custom video player loaded with previews, and a custom commenting application on several tabs. Really proud of this one!

  6. I nominate Cafe Brazil in Dallas, TX.

    http://facebook.com/cafebrazil

They haven’t relied on custom pages or big budget promotions to achieve a deep level of engagement with their 5,700+ Facebook Fans! They rely on witty conversation and fun interaction to keep their Fans coming back for more.

Good 2 Go Taco gets my vote.

They change their menu every day and post a pic of the menu on their FB page to keep their fans updated.

The owners regularly engage with fans as well, taking feedback on the days menu and also making adjustments based on recommendations. Super simple, low-fi and extremely effective.

  8. dave says:

Thanks Mark. We’ve fixed the link.

  9. dave says:

    thanks Elana, fixed.

They also respond to every post their customers make. You can tell just by looking at their fan page that their customers love them. They have their route map in one of their tabs as well. And routinely give away airline tickets to their fans! http://www.facebook.com/akroncantonairport

  13. I’d like to nominate the 17-Time World Champion Boston Celtics. We’ve got over 560,000 fans, a number that is currently top 10 among sports teams globally according to InsideFacebook.

We were the first NBA team to launch an interactive Facebook game, Celtics 3-Point Play, which allows fans to win prizes for correctly predicting the statistical output of their favorite players. Plus, we publish regular video updates to our page after home games, and we break team news on Facebook as it’s happening in real time.

… because those guys don’t monkey around!

They are so on top of their social media projects. They are constantly updating with thoughtful, meaningful, fun and interactive content. They are hosting a sweepstakes through Facebook for fans to win VIP tickets to their show’s premiere in D.C., zoo memberships, advanced copies of the book and companion CD – and more … and an essay contest for cash prizes!

They constantly ask questions for participation and they interact with their fans each day and all day, no matter how positive or negative the comment.

They are clever and intriguing. And they work their tails off!
